Set Dressing

One of the more time consuming aspects of drawing SuRe are the scenery elements. Drawing characters is easy, and I’d love to just draw goofy faces on flat backgrounds every day. But SuRe is as much a love letter to New York City (in particular, Brooklyn) as it is a story about the people living there. So I would be remiss in not including the buildings, the parks, and the streets that make up my life here. In an effort to find a happy medium, I’ve begun experimenting with creating “sets” as a reusable shorthand for outdoor locations. We’ll see how well it works.

With that, Chapter One draws to a close. Those of you who watched Strip Search have an inkling of what is about to transpire, but I assure you that the ride is a bit more scenic than what was presented in the pilot. I hope you’ll sit back and take in the sights.

Networking

You may have noticed a few things different on the site. Like that crazy bar right above this post (Don’t click it yet!). Now that SuRe is fully hooked up to Hiveworks, you can use that bar to see which comics have updated on any given day. The advantage of being of being in a network like this is that everyone in the network is helping each other out by driving traffic and raising awareness. It’s a big, happy webcomics community.

But there’s ways you can be a part of this happy community, too. I need all the help I can get raising awareness and spreading the comic around. Social media is a big part of that. Sufficiently Remarkable has a facebook page and you can find out news about all my projects on my twitter. If you like SuRe, seriously consider retweeting along with favoriting tweets, or sharing along with liking. After all, liking a post on facebook gives me an ego boost, but sharing brings in new readers. Readers are what keeps this industry afloat, and staying afloat keeps me happy and making comics smile

Retail

I promised myself a long time ago that I wouldn’t do any retail job comics in SuRe.

As far as webcomics go, it’s a pretty well-used plot device (though only because it’s a ubiquitous real life plot device). Originally I had planned to skip the details of her day altogether, but in the end acquiesced in order to better set up Friday’s comic. Strips like this give me room to insert little clues into aspects of the story not related to the comic itself. All this early scene-setting has a purpose after all. Just don’t expect too many glimpses into Riti’s work day.

Exposition

Those familiar with the Sufficiently Remarkable pilot on Strip Search should have no fear of having been spoiled to the events in the comic. I’ve fiddled with it a bit. I won’t tell you how much, though.

Most importantly, the pilot left out a lot of setup. I couldn’t justify it given the judge’s preference towards humor. So in many ways, folks watching the show got a not-so-accurate picture of what I envisioned for the comic. Pacing and rhythm often favor a punchline. It just works better for a strip to have beats. It feels weird to be left hanging at the end of a comic. Against all my better judgment, I’m going to play around with that a bit throughout the course of the story. We’ll see how it goes.
